Abstract
Over the last decade we have witnessed the emergence of commercial computing. The impact of this development on the accounting profession has been considerable. The tentative early relationship between accounting and automation is reviewed first. Next, some of the technological and philosophical changes that have helped to smooth the marriage between the two professions are examined. Finally, we look at current technology and priorities with an eye to the future.
